In the past few years the public has been introduced to the greenhouse effect, ozone depletion,
acid rain and mass species extinction. These environmental threats are global in scale and
could effect the very viability of life on earth. Through industrialization, our species has affected
the biochemistry of the entire planet. If human accomplishment was measured in terms of sheer
impact, global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain and species extinction may well be
considered the greatest accomplishments of the human race.
Burning fossil fuels to generate energy pollutes the air, water, atmosphere creating global
climate change and damaging the health of humans and all living creatures that inhabit this
wonderous planet we call EARTH. The extraction and burning of fossil fuels is one of the worst
contributors to acid rain and the greenhouse effect (via the production of sulphur dioxide,
nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide).
Alternate forms of energy to oil include human power (doing things by hand rather than by
machine), solar, wind water, tidal, geothermal energy. In comparison these renewable energy
sources are clean and green.
"There is no other person who is going to
do it. There is only you and me and friends
who share in the spirit. This is our planet.
There is no 'one out' there who is going to
put the bad things right. Only ourselves"

Some things we can start doing to make a difference:
- Look for energy efficient homes when purchasing,
building or renting
- Turn off appliances and lighting when not in use
- Make sure seals on fridges/freezers are working
properly and there is no leakage
- Opt for solar - water heating, calculaters, watches,
energy panels
- Use cold water, not hot, for washing clothes, rinsing
dishes and other household chores
- Use a clothes line, not a dryer.
- Turn off appliances not in use
- Walk, car pool, cycle and use mass transit
(bus/trains/ferries)
- Consider buying a hybrid car
